Halal wa haram fil Islam
The lawful and the prohibited in Islam

This is a summery of Halal wa haram fil Islam by Yusuf Al-Qardawi which has complete explanations of the reasons for each rule. I highly recommend it.

To just a casual reader this sounds like a horrible curtailment of someone's rights; but then again

  1. Thou shalt stop a red lights
  2. Thou shalt not cross the yellow line; except when dotted and then only to pass slower cars
  3. Thou shalt not go faster then the posted speed limit
  4. etc etc etc
would be equally dry reading; yet those laws are for our own benefit and protection. Please read these with the same open mind.

To Marry as soon as able to.
Feed and clothe your wife to the same standard as yourself
never strike her face or cut her with words
The Prophet (PBUH) never beat any of his wives or servants; in fact he did

the prohibitions of Allah were violated, and he retaliated on behalf of
          Allah.
never estrange yourself from your wife except within the house.
It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah to allow
anyone in her husband's house while he dislikes it, nor should she
beat him. If he is more in the wrong then she, she should plead
with him until he is reconciled. If he accepts her pleading,
well and good and her plea will be accepted by Allah; while if he
is not reconciled with her, her plea will still have reached
        Allah in any case.
"Consort with your wives in kindness, for if you dislike them, it may
